Ahead of the Leaving

Ahead of the Leaving

Along the hall

Where they once trod

Blossoming children

We never thought

Of what was here

And what would stay

Never seeing it

Escaping feet on the stairwell

Echos heard most evenings

lengthened and lengthened

Reaching out later and later

Announcing the end had

Already arrived ahead of the leaving.  I.
